How to Measure Your Stump

A quick measurement helps us quote your project faster.

  1. 01

    Measure the widest point

Place a tape measure across the stump at ground level from the widest edge to the opposite edge.

  2. 02

    Include the root flare

If the base of the stump spreads wider than the trunk, measure the widest portion that will need to be ground.

  3. 03

Take a photo with the tape visible

If possible, leave the tape measure across the stump when taking your photo so our team can verify the approximate size.

  4. 04

    Show us the access

Take another photo from farther back showing the stump and surrounding area. Include gates, fences, buildings, landscaping, driveways, or anything that could affect equipment access.

Measuring Questions

Do I measure the trunk or the base?

Measure at ground level across the widest point. If the base flares out wider than the trunk, include that flare — it has to be ground too.

What if I don't have a tape measure?

An estimate is fine. Place a common object like a shoe or a 5-gallon bucket next to the stump for scale, or pick “Not Sure” on the form.

I have a lot of stumps. Do I measure each one?

No. Give us an approximate count, the size of the largest ones, and a few photos or a short video of the whole area.

Why do you need an access photo?

Gates, fences, slopes, landscaping and structures affect which equipment fits and how long the job takes.
